Abstract

End-of-life research has long recognized the importance of narrative at the end of life. This volume draws on this work and explores narratives at and about the end of life from different perspectives. It focuses especially on testing the concept of the "death narrative."

Abstract

"The long tradition of pessimism in philosophy and poetry notoriously laments suffering caused by vulnerabilities of the human body. The most familiar and contemporary version is antinatalism, the view that it is wrong to bring sentient life into existence because birth inevitably produces suffering. Technotopianism, which stems from a similarly negative view of embodied limitations, claims that we should escape sickness and death through radical human-enhancement technologies. In Embodiment and the Meaning of Life Jeff Noonan presents pessimism and technotopianism as two sides of the same coin, as both begin from the premise that the limitations of embodied life are inherently negative. He argues that rather than rendering life pointless, the tragic failures that mark life are fundamental to the good of human existence. The necessary limitations of embodied being are challenges for each person to live well, not only for their own sake, but for the sake of the future of the human project. Meaning is not a given, Noonan suggests, but rather the product of labour upon ourselves, others, and the world. Meaningful labour is threatened equally by unjust social systems and runaway technological development that aims to replace human action, rather than liberate it. Calling on us to draw conceptual connections between finitude, embodiment, and the meaning of life, this book shows that seeking the common good is our most viable and materially realistic source of optimism about the future."--

Abstract

"Drawing on her family's own experiences and those of other parents facing the death of a child from illness or a life-limiting condition, Sacha Langton-Gilks explains the challenges, planning, and conversations that can be expected during this traumatic period. Practical advice such as how to work with the healthcare professionals, drawing up an Advance Care Plan, and how to move care into the home sit alongside tender observations of how such things worked in her own family's story. The book also includes a template person-centred planning document, developed by experts in the field. Empowering and reassuring, this book will help families plan and ensure the best possible end-of-life care for a child or young person."--

Abstract

Title: How to improve the anticipated demand for an end-of-life therapeutic project in order to make it more suitable for the care of nursing home residents?Introduction: The therapeutic project with regards to end of life care is the conception that each individual has when facing the prospect of death in situations where the person is not able to express his or her wishes anymore. There is no legal form in our country concerning the therapeutic project of end of life care, also known as the declaration of intents regarding treatments mentioned in the Patient Rights Law of 22 August 2002. Methods: In order to understand how to improve the willingness to fill in this form, an observational and transverse study has been conducted. A questionnaire with semi-open questions was developed. The latter was subject to 89 interviews from residents with full judgement capacity living in two rest and care homes. The questionnaire was transcribed into an Excel file and those data were analysed using the R Commander (version 3.2.2) software. Results: the data analysis showed that 63,2% of the interviewed residents have never heard of the therapeutic project of end of life care. The analysis also revealed that 59% of the people wishing to be informed about it, would rather receive written documentation. The ideal time for awareness-raising on the subject is clearly divided between the residents. Conclusion: The study highlights the importance of raising residents’ awareness and information concerning the therapeutic project with regards to end of life care. Keywords: therapeutic project of end of life care, residents’ rest and/or care home, human dignity.

Abstract

Abstract

'The Evolution of the British Funeral Industry in the 20th Century' examines the shifts that have taken place in the funeral industry since 1900, focusing on the figure of the undertaker and exploring how organisational change and attempts to gain recognition as a professional service provider saw the role morph into that of 'funeral director'. As the disposal of the dead increased in complexity during the twentieth century, the role of the undertaker/funeral director has mirrored this change. Whilst the undertaker of 1900 primarily encoffined and transported the body, today's funeral director provides other services, such as taking responsibility for the body of the deceased and embalming, and has overseen changes such as the increasing preference for cremation, the impact of technology on the production of coffins and the shift to motorised transport. These factors, together with the problem of succession for some family-run funeral businesses, have led large organisations to make acquisitions and manage funerals on a centralised basis, achieving economies of scale. This book examines how the occupation has sought to reposition itself and how the 'funeral director' has become an essential functionary in funerary practices. However, despite striving for new-found status the role is hindered by two key issues: the stigma of handling the dead, and the perception of making a profit from loss.

Abstract

The human body is the locus of meaning, personhood, and our sense of the possibility of sanctity. The desecration of the human corpse is a matter of universal revulsion, taboo in virtually all human cultures. Not least for this reason, the unburied corpse quickly becomes a focal point of political salience, on the one hand seeming to express the contempt of state power toward the basic claims of human dignity--while on the other hand simultaneously bringing into question the very legitimacy of that power. In Unburied Bodies: Subversive Corpses and the Authority of the Dead, James Martel surveys the power of the body left unburied to motivate resistance, to bring forth a radically new form of agency, and to undercut the authority claims made by state power. Ranging across time and space from the battlefields of ancient Thebes to the streets of Ferguson, Missouri, and taking in perspectives from such writers as Sophocles, Machiavelli, Walter Benjamin, Hannah Arendt, James Baldwin, Judith Butler, Thomas Lacqueur, and Bonnie Honig, Martel asks why the presence of the abandoned corpse can be seen by both authorities and protesters as a source of power, and how those who have been abandoned or marginalized by structures of authority can find in a lifeless body fellow accomplices in their aspirations for dignity and humanity.

Abstract

Abstract

How did people of the past prepare for death, and how were their preparations affected by religious beliefs or social and economic responsibilities? 'Dying Prepared in Medieval and Early Modern Northern Europe' analyses the various ways in which people made preparations for death in medieval and early modern Northern Europe, adapting religious teachings to local circumstances. The articles span the period from the Middle Ages to Early Modernity allowing an analysis over centuries of religious change that are too often artificially separated in historical study
